Qi is the fundamental driving force of life, essential for every aspect of our existence. The spleen and stomach rely on Qi to digest food, the body requires Qi to move and expel waste, our immune defenses depend on Qi to resist external pathogens, and even growth and development cannot happen without it.

When Qi becomes insufficient, it is important to replenish it. For children, pseudostellaria root (also known as child ginseng/tai zi sen) is often the preferred choice. Sweet with a hint of bitterness, neutral in nature, and entering the spleen and lung meridians, it is traditionally valued for its ability to tonify Qi, strengthen the spleen, generate fluids, and moisten the lungs.

Its greatest strength lies in its gentle, balanced character. It nourishes without causing internal dryness or heat, generates fluids without promoting dampness, supports the body’s righteous Qi without trapping pathogens, and replenishes deficiency in a mild, steady way rather than with harsh intensity.

Compared with other types of ginseng, pseudostellaria root is especially suited to children, offering reliable support for their delicate constitutions.

Don’t make these mistakes — or you could make your condition worse!

  • Never do moxibustion in an air-conditioned room. Your body opens up during treatment. Cold air can sneak in and cause worse issues.

  • Morning is the best time. The heat is gentler, and it helps uplift your body’s yang energy for the day.

  • Avoid going out immediately after. Let your body cool down naturally and wear proper clothing.

  • If done at night, ensure it doesn’t interfere with your sleep, and always switch off the air-con before you start.
